GOLD COAST, Australia (AP-CP) -- Canadians finished first in four events and second in three others Sunday at the Gold Coast Meet, a tuneup for the Sydney Olympics.

Jason Tunks of London, Ont., won the discus competition, beating world champion Anthony Washington, who was third. Tunks threw 10.18 metres.

Kevin Sullivan of Brantford, Ont. won the 1,500 metres in a time of 3:42.90, well ahead of American Adam Goucher at 3:45.72.

Adrian Woodley of Toronto won the 100-metre hurdles in 13.63 seconds, edging out Gabriel Burnett of Barbados, who finished in 13.92.
v In the 3,000 metre steeplechase, Joel Bourgeois of Grand-Digue, N.B. beat Australian Richard Jeremiah by about 27 seconds with a time of 8:51.55.

Zachary Whitmarsh of Victoria finished second in the 800 metres, clocking 1:49.35, just behind Australian Grant Cremer's 1:48.96.

In the shot put, Brad Snyder of Windsor, Ont., finished second to Justin Anlezark of Australia with a toss of 20.26 metres.

In the 400-metre hurdles, Calgary's Karlene Haughton timed a 57.16 which was good for second behind Aussie Jana Pittmann's 56.12.
v Still trying to show the Jamaican federation that she's fit enough for a sixth Olympics, 40-year-old Merlene Ottey, whose scheduled two-year ban for steroid use was reduced to one year this season, won the women's 100 metres in a wind-aided 10.91 seconds.
v "This year my goal has been to be in my sixth Olympics," Ottey said afterward. "It's been quite a fight. I have to wait to see if Jamaica will let me in the 100."
v Ottey finished fourth in the Jamaican trials, only 0.02 seconds behind the winner, and the federation told her she would be a member of the 400-metre relay team.

That wasn't good enough for the highly decorated Ottey, winner of seven Olympics medals -- two silvers and five bronzes.
v The Jamaican team will decide its three 100-metre runners Sept. 19, three days before the opening heats of the Olympic race. If she doesn't run in the 100, Ottey said, "I think I will go on vacation."
