Canadians Earn 5 Conference Championship Throws Titles

Scott Russell Canadians attending US colleges earned 3 conference titles over the weekend and numerous medals were garnered also as things heated up on the way to the NCAA championships on the first weekend in June. Scott Russell, Robin Lyons, Sarah Fletcher, and Liz Toman led the way as conference champs while Russell was a double winner. Russell won convincingly at the Big 12 Championships with a win in the javelin and hammer. Russell threw 73.24 in javelin and 59.47 in hammer. Russell also also managed a mark of 49.04 in discus despite the wet conditions. Andrea Bulat, a teammate of Russell's at Kansas was a third place finisher in javelin with a throw of 48.08. Liz Toman lead a Canadian sweep in thwe Mountain West discus with a throw of 52.86 and was third in shot with throw of 14.42. Robin Lyons was second with 50.98 and Marie LeJour was third with 48.60 to complete the sweep. Lyons also won the Mountain West women's hammer with a toss of 62.44. LeJour was a strong point scorer for Wyoming with 18 point total. After the discus Lejour was 4th in shot with 14.37, 5th in javelin with 40.44 and 6th in hammer with 55.62. Other Mountain West results included Jason Gervais finishing 2nd in shot with 19.20, 2nd in hammer with 62.44, and 3rd in discus with 58.10. Fletcher rounded out the conference wins with a personal best in women's hammer and a throw of 55.94. Fletcher also finished 6th in discus with a throw of 43.56.

At the Pac-10 conference championships, Jennifer Joyce established a new personal best to finish 2nd in the women's hammer with a toss of 62.86. Meanwhile, Garret Collier finished 5th with a thorw of 61.24 in men's hammer.

At the Big Ten championships Dave Matson was 2nd in men's javelin with a throw of 66.65 while NIcole Chimko was 3rd in javelin with a throw of 50.96 and was 4th in discus with 48.74.

At the WAC championships Lianne Coombe and ANdrea Stelter led the Canadian action. Coombe, attending SMU, was 2nd in the shot with 13.41, 4th in discus with 43.64, and 6th in hammer with 50.03. Andrea Stelter, competing for Fresno State, finished in 4th in shot with 12.72, 6th in javelin with 32.82 and finished 7th in hammer with 47.80.

As the Canadian action above the 49th parallel is slowly getting underway and noteable performances are slowly trickling in. Georgette Reed opened her season at the New Balance Athletic Series in Calgary with a throw of 46.70 in discus for her first competition of the season. Decathlete Greg Urbanczyk of the Chinook Track Club won the mens discus with a throw of 39.70, while decathletes Rob English and Trevor Philips of Calgary Track West were 2nd and 3rd repectively with tosses of 38.37 and 37.68. Junior Erin Riste, also of the Chinook Track Club, won the junior women's hammer and discus events with throws of 52.27 and 34.75 respectively. At the Abbotsford High Performance Caroline Wittrin led the way in women's hammer with a throw of 58.65 to round out the weekends results.
