Beck, Demarnie Earn NJCAA Championship Titles

Charlie BeckCharlie Beck and Julie Demarnie came back from the National Junior College Athletic Association Championships in Edwardsville Illinois as National Champions. Charlie Beck, a member of the Canadian Junior National team to the Junior Pan Am Games from Fort St. James threw 59.24 to win the javelin at the championships. Julie DeMarnie of Gibsons threw 41.55 to win the women's event. The two B.C. athletes are attending North Idaho College and were joined by teammates Crystal Smith and Joe Woodske of Creston B.C. at the Championships. Smith was second in the women's hammer with a personal best toss of 49.48 while Woodske threw 54.18 in men's hammer to finish fourth.

In NCAA action at the Air Force Twilite Invitational Jason Gervais was again dominant as he unleashed a huge toss in the men's discus. Gervais won the event by over 14m when his throw was measured at 64.26. Gervais shattered the University of Wyoming School record with his throw.The Timmons, Ontario native is automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in all three throwing events. His discus throw is the third-best throw in the country this season, while his shot put and hammer marks also put him in elite company. Gervais also won the Twilite shot with a throw of 18.29 and was second in the hammer with a throw of 60.45. Competing at the same meet Andrew McDonagh won the javelin with a thorw of 68.48 while his fiance Mary LeJour was the top collegian in the discus with a throw of 47.54 and was third in javelin and fourth in shot put.

Nicole Chimko At the Minnesota Qualifier Nicole Chimko won the javelin with a toss of 44.82 and was the top collegian in the discus with a throw of 51.94. Chimko, a senior at Minnesota, is presently ranked 12th in the NCAA in discus with a throw of 53.76 and 14th in javelin. This weekend Chimko will travel with the rest of the Gophers to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Big Ten Championships, May 19-21, at the University of Iowa.

At the Tom Gage Classic in Bozeman Montana Ian Maplethorpe led the way with a season best throw of 65.19 in men's hammer to win the event. Murray Heber was 4th with a throw of 55.60. In women's hammer action, Patti Pilsner-Steinke led the way with a throw of 59.90 while teammates Carla Pavan and Erin Riste were 2nd and 4th repectively with tosses of 54.19 and 53.28

In other noteable US results SMU student and club SISU athlete Lianne Coombe had a personal best in women's hammer with a throw of 53.60 and Liz Toman, also of Club SISU also had a personal best in women's discus with a throw of 53.60.

In Canadian action at the Jean-Paul Baert Invitational noteable results included Caroline Larose opening her season with a toss of 14.00 in women's shot put while junior Brian Mcphee threw 14.73 in shot, and 45.43 in discus.
