Halle International Throws Meeting

11 May 2000 - The CGU Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the Halle International Throws Meeting on 27 May 2000 in Halle, Germany has been selected.

A British team has been travelling to this competition since 1992 to compete in a high quality event against top German throwers. As ever, the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team is strong with the nation's number one ranked athletes in five of the seven events.

Mark Proctor, who has already thrown over the Olympic qualifying standard of 19.70 this year, will be wanting to make up for last year's disappointing showing at this meeting when he had three no throws. Emeka Udechuku, the 20 year old World Junior Silver medallist, will make his GB Senior debut. Both Nick Nieland and David Parker in the javelin have Olympic aspirations. Mick Jones, who continues to improve at the age of 36, will look to achieve the elusive Olympic qualifying mark of 75.50 having thrown 74.89 last week.

In the women's discus, Philippa Roles and Shelley Drew will resume their rivalry. Philippa topped the UK lists with 60.00 in 1999, but Shelley beat her on all seven occasions that they met. British record holder (59.50) Karen Martin heads up the javelin along with AAA Champion Kirsty Morrison and Lorna Jackson, our second furthest thrower with 56.00. Commonwealth Games Silver medallist, Lorraine Shaw, who set her 12th GB record last August, will be looking for a top six finish when her event makes its Olympic debut in Sydney. She is joined in the hammer by Liz Pidgeon and Lyn Sprules.
