Hammer Throw the Event of the Weekend

May 04 1998

This past weekend served notice that hammer is alive and well in Canada and in particular, women's hammer. Entering the Foot Locker National Throws Rankings for the first time this season was Patti Pilsner-Steinke of the Chinook Track and Field Club who, with her 55.72m throw, threw the third farthest ever by a female hammer thrower in Canada. While competing at the University of Montana Open she also established a new provincial record as well as a new stadium record. Club mate Carla Pavan also entered the rankings by starting out with a 47.00m throw while finishing second to Pilsner-Steinke. At the SFU/Fraser Valley Invitational Jennifer Joyce, a Vancouver Kajaks thrower, threatened the Canadian Junior women's hammer record of 52.22 by throwing 51.94m. This was her second time over the 50m barrier so far this season. Also breaking the 50m barrier was junior Sarah Fletcher who threw 50.18m while competing at the Missouri Invitational. Fletcher is attending school at Illinios State. This sets the stage for a tough National Junior Championships as this year already has the highest quality of performances in women's hammer, and is proving to be the deepest throws event in Canada.

On the men's side Derek Woodske won the Region 18 Championships with a throw of 60.54m in hammer while Garret Collier threw within 2cm of his pb when he threw 56.78m at the Stanford - California Dual meet. Collier did have a pb in discus though as he maintained his hold on second place in the Foot Locker National Throws Rankings by throwing 48.68m. He now sits second in the rankings in both hammer and discus behind Scott Russell who leads the junior rankings in all four throwing events. Russell had a strong weekend, when in less than six hours, threw 15.53m in Shot Put, which was a pb, 70.50m in javelin, his third time over 70m this season, 50.38m in discus, and 57.02m in hammer in a scored meet at Washington state. Russell has a very good shot at winning all four events at the National Junior Championships and if he does it will be the first time anyone has completed this task.

Sophomore Nicole Chimko improved upon her personal best and increased her lead in the rankings while competing at University of Minnesota at the unscored Minnesota Classic at the Bierman Field Track Saturday. Her throw measured 51.92m. This is Chimko's fourth time over the 50m barrier and looks to be in fine form.

Juvenile Dylan Armstrong had a huge throw in Hammer with the 12lb hammer while also competing at the SFU/Fraser Valley Invitational. Armstrong's throw of 68.46m is probably a National juvenile best and we will keep everyone informed on the status of this throw as we check in to this. He now leads the juvenile rankings in Shot as well as Hammer.
