Javelin Record FallsMarch 26/1998Mike Mahovolich's twelve year old javelin record finally fell this past weekend in New Zealand. Erin Bevins Competing in the New Zealand Championships posted a personal best and new Canadian Record of 79.52m in the men's javelin. Bevans had early season results over 77m and it looked like he was on Canadian record pace right from the start of his outdoor campaign. Now the question is, how long until the elusive 80m barrier is broken by a Canadian. Everything points to this barrier being broken in 1998 and the man to do it will in all likely hood be Bevans. Mike Mahovolich established the old record of 79.04 in Seattle Washington on April 26 1986, the first year of the new javelin design. Garrett Collier posted a personal best of 56.02 in men's hammer at the UCLA Invitational in Los Angeles this past weekend. Collier also has an early season throw of 47.28m in Discus. He will be in action again this weekend at the Stanford invitational as well as Canadians Sammi Jo Small, who competed in the winter olympics in Nagano Japan in women's hockey, and Julie Mcniven.
