North American Record for ArmstrongJune 15 1998At the Golden West Invitational at American River College, Sacramento California, Dylan Armstrong established a North American Juvenile Hammer record with the 12lb implement. Armstrong, an 11th grader at Westsyde Secondary, in Kamloops BC, took control of the event from the start. On his opening throw he broke the meet record of 65.40, set by John Badovinac, of Sacramento, in 1997, with a mark of 69.62. Armstrong went up from there, finishing with a "monster" best of 71.36. Dylan's best mark was more than two feet further than Manny Silverio's US HS record of 70.68 set in 1976. The Golden West record in HS Boys Hammer is now better than the US HS Boys National record. In Women's Hammer at the same meet, Maureen Griffith, who earlier in the season established a new US women's junior hammer record of 61.44m easily won the competition with a throw of 57.04. Taking up the next three spots were Canadians Jennifer Joyce 50.62. Andrea Stelter 50.12 ( a personal best), and Çarol Stevenson 49.17. At the Riversdale Relays, Noreena Bodaglo won the women's hammer with a season opener of 48.82m while Karla Johnson finished second with a new Saskatchewan Provincial record of 47.40. Johsnons throw bettered Rebeca Atkinson's record of 45.56m set at the 1997 Canada Summer Games. Tara Baker had a personal best of 46.02 to finish third. Clubmate Carla Pavan was close behind with a toss of 45.94m. In women's shot Jill Ryback finished first with a season's best so far of 12.86 while Karla Johnson finished second with a throw of 12.16m.
