Stoikos Wins Centennial

June 11 1999

John Stoikos won what might be one of the most hotly contested men's hammer competitions of the season when he narrowly edged out junior Dylan Armstrong and veteran Ian Maplethorpe. Going into round five, stoikos led with a throw of 64.95 to Armstrongs 64.86 and Maplethorpes 64.12 and then in the final round, Stoikos pulled out farther with a toss of 65.35. Armstrong proved he will be a stong co-favourite going into the Pan Am Junior Championships with all of his throws over his previous personal best of 61.42 which was set last summer in Kelowna. Derek Evely, the meet organizer and head coach of the Kamloops Track Club would like to thank head official Big Al Mcleod and his assistant Big Terry Harbicht for running a superb competition. There was over 200 spectators in attendance for the event which started over an hour after the last track event ended and many had gone home and come back just for this event. This event is to become and annual event at the Kamloops Centennial and by the reaction and conversations throughout the weekend it will be a welcomed one.
