OFSAA Preview

June 5 1998

This weekend should feature some of the best age class throwing in the country as Ontario (OFSAA) hosts their High School Provincial Championships. The meet begins Thrusday and runs through to Saturday. The following is a brief preview of the throwing events.

The senior women's and junior men's competitions should be the closest and most hotly contested.

Senior women's javelin has four women in it who have thrown over 40m. As was the case at West Regionals, everythingindicates it will be a battle to the end. [VICKI WEBB, GALT C.I., 46.60; ANDREA BULAT, BRENNAN/WINDSOR,44.18; DEANNA ZELINKA, BANTING / LONDON, 42.01; KYLEE LYON, BANTING / LONDON, 39.96m]

Senior women's discus has six women at the 38m level or better. This is anyone's championship to win, but Lianne Coombe should be the favorite heading in. The West Regional was a great discus battle with four women over 39m. [LIANNE COOMBE, SIMCOE, 40.92; JOS JOBIN, VILLANOVA / WINDSOR, 40.29; JENNIFER BUTLER, STRATHROY, 39.76; MARY LISLE, F.E. MADILL /WINGHAM, 39.51m]. An interesting note is that Canadian Junior Shot Record Holder, Jonny Neilson is coaching at Strathroy.

Senior shot has five women with 12m+ throws in the competition, but this should really be a battle between the two top juniors in the country Nicole Clarke and Lianne for the gold.

Junior men's javelin will be exciting as potentially the top eight will all throw over 50m. East Regionals featured the top three throwers with distances in excess of last year's winning performance. Ian Smith (Trinity, Port Hope) 55.92, Travis Brennan (Thousand Islands, Brockville) 55.20, Matt Carkner (T.A. Stewart, Peterborough) 54.02m. Fourth was 52m and fifth, not qualifying for OFSAA, was Matt Murdock the second ranked juvenile thrower at 50.50m. The West Region was also hotly contested 1 P. J. Chalut (BRENNAN/WINDSOR) 53.08, Tim Bloomfield (ST. BENEDICT) 49.99, Derek Cox (LAM CENTRAL/PETROL) 49.38, Dave Lamky (SOUTHWOOD/CAMBRIDG) 49.12m. Other regional results are not available but it is likely that there are several other throwers out there with 50m+ performances.

Junior men's discus should be a close battle between Anthony Forgione and Brian MacPhee. Anthony has a 51m throw and Brian threw 49.38m to win East Regionals. Steve Bedard from Windsor has also thrown 47m this spring, so the winner should be one of these three. Following these three leaders is a large pack of young men between 42-44m which might step up into medal position should one of these three faulter.

Junior men's shot put should be the Fraser Clarke show. He easy won the West Regional and has several middle 17m throws out there this spring. From reports he was apparently faulting 18m throws. The close battle that was expected between Fraser and last year's OFSAA silver medalist Steve Bedard has yet to materialize, but may at OFSAA. After these two men, it's anyone's guess as to who the bronze medalist will be -- there's a pack of high 14m and low 15m throwers, including Brian MacPhee and Anthony Forgione.

The midget cmpetitions are shaping up as an interesting batle, simply because there doesn't seem to be a dominate thrower. It's anyone's championship!

Senior Boys Shot Put: According to the form charts this should be a two man show with everyone else battling it out for bronze. Corey Trudeau is the only thrower consistently throwing 18m. Viktor Mara of London Banting is consistently throwing mid 17's. After these two there is a pack of high 14's low 15m. Mike Melaney (St. Peter's, Peterborough) has had a rough spring and will enter OFSAA ranked in the middle of the pack, but could easily pop a 17m throw to put a scare into Viktor and Corey. Barring a major disaster, Corey should win, with Viktor grabbing silver.

West Regional Results: Viktor Mara (Banting/London) 17.40, Corey Phair (Wiarton DHS) 15.02m, Trevor Phillips (Banting/London) 15.02m, Scott Smith (St Clair/Sarnia) 14.53m East Regional Results: Corey Trudeau (Bayridge) 18.42 metres (record), Mike Cook (Bayside/Belleville) 14.49, Mike Melaney (St. Peter's/Peterborough) 14.21* (a fall away stand throw)

Senior Boys Discus: Three men with 50m+ throws. However, the top four seeds have not exactly been consistent. When they're on, they're awesome, when they're not, well ... This is really too tight to call. Based on performance John Wawrysh (54m+) should win, Corey and Darren Negri should battle it out for the other two medals. Mike Melaney, should not be discounted. He had a huge throw (52m rnage) land just out of bounds at East Regionals. The real fun here will be who makes the top eight as everyone else is in the 43-45m range.

West Regional Results: John Wawrysh (Banting/London) 50.02m, Viktor Mara (Banting/London) 45.68m, Darrin Negri (Blenheim DHS) 45.68m, Trevor Phillips (Banting/London) 45.18 East Regional Results: Corey Trudeau (Bayridge) 47.60, Mike Melaney (St. Peter's, Peterborough) 45.70, Ryan Donovan (Gananoque) 44.86, Brad Kohlsmith (Opeongo/Douglas) 44.86m

Senior Boys Javelin: Well it won't be the 65m battle it was last year, but this is shaping up to be a highly entertaining competition, mostly because it's anyone's to win. Anyone in the top twelve could win it as the field is tightly bunched between 49m & 54m.

West Regional Results: Shane Downey (Oakridge/London) 53.62, Jeff Young (Medway/Arva) 51.99m, Jason Vandam (Northern/Sarnia) 51.84, Jason Farmer (South/London) 49.26 East Regional Results: Nigel Hearns (Brockville) 51.02 metres, Kelly Paddon (Belleville/Centennial) 50.08, Adam Janke (Opeongo/Douglas) 48.08, Ryan Donovan (Gananoque) 47.56

Two schools should finish high up in the OFSAA Team rankings based solely on their throwers: Banting/London (coach -- John Allen) and Opeongo/Douglas (coach -- Tom May)

Opeongo is quite a story as it is just a small country school, literally in the middle or nowhere (halfway between Eganville and Cobden in Renfrew County), surrounded by cow pasture! Year in and year out they develop outstanding throwers, without a huge population base to do it from. They should have medals in the midget, junior and senior boys competition.
