National Records at Canadian Speed and Power CampJuly17 1998The Canadian National Speed and Power Group, which includes the throws, conducted a National Camp/Competition in Flagstaff Arizona from July 7-15. The camp provided athletes a highly competitive opportunity and a learning experience for the younger throwers. The camp was intended to provide as many competitive opportunities as possible in a short period of time as well as an opportunity for coaches to share ideas and evaluate the future of Canadian Throwing. Three Canadian records in the throws were established and numerous personal bests were had over the duration of the camp. Over 75% of the throwers attending had personal bests and many of the others came close as over 250 athletes in total attended the camp. This exceeded National Speed and Power Development Chair Andy Mcinnis's wildest expectations. "It was great to see this many athletes lining up against one another, and the number of pb's was incredible, definitely a success".
Noteworthy results included Caroline Wittrin setting a Canadian Record twice in women's hammer and Jennifer Joyce establishing a new Canadian Junior record in women's hammer. Wittrin started out slowly as she finished second and third in the first two meets but bounced back after a rest on the weekend to win both meets on the Monday and Tuesday with results of 60.08m and 60.85m. Finshing second was Patti Pilsner-Steinke with throws of 58.68m and 58.54m. Michelle Fournier finished third with throws of 57.49m and 56.76m after having won the first two meets with results of 57.92m and a personal best of 58.35m in the first meet. In the third meet Joyce established her new junior record of 53.45m John Stoikos also provided great throwing as he came close to his personal best of 70.60m when he threw 70.18m in the third meet. Glenn Mcatee also bettered his personal best with throws of 65.49m and 65.65 in the first and third meets.
