National Record for LyonsJan 25 1999Robin Lyons set a new Canadian open record in the weight throw this past weekend at the University of Wyoming Cowboy/Cowgirl Classic. Her throw of 20.78m broke the record she establiished in December of 19.97m. This throw also moves her into first place in the NCAA rankings ahead of Renetta Sieler of Kansas State who is the only other thrower over 20m with a result of 20.14. At the same meet Derek Woodske threw a personal best of 20.68m in the weight to move him back into fith place in the NCAA rankings. Jason Gervais improved his weight throw best to 19.79 at this meet also. Meanwhile at Kansas Scott Russell was also moving himself into a tie for 5th in the NCAA Rankings with Woodske when he threw 20.68m in weight. Russell also won the shot with a toss of 17.32. Caroline Larose also captured first at this meet with a throw of 14.06m in the shot. At the Missouri Invitational Sarah FLetcher had a personal best in the weight of 17.64m and finished second. She also finished third in the shot with a throw of 12.63m. Also this weekend at the U.S. Air Force Academy meet, Liz Toman won the shot with a throw of 13.50m On the Canadian Scene, Paul Drogaris of McGill upped his seasonal best and took over sole posession of the CIAU first place ranking in men's shot. He threw 16.35m to win the Mcgill Invitational. In second was Mike Thorne of Queen's with 14.19m and third was France Gagne of Laval with a toss of 13.88m. At the same meet Tina McDonald of the University of Toronto won the shot with a throw of 13.98m while Anna Tomlinson of York was second with 12.94m. Third place was taken by Nicole Clarke of Queen's with a toss of 12.64m. At the OTFA Allcomers/Relays at York University a number of provincial records fell as well as a number personal bests and club records. Lianne Coombe led the way with two personal bests in the shot and a new Ontario Indoor Record for 18-year-olds with a throw of 14.02m. The old Ontario record for 18-year-olds was 13.99m held by Michelle Brotherton of the York University Optimists set on March 3/85 in Windsor. The Ontario Junior record (19 and under) stands at 16.15m set by Nancy McCredie set back on this same date back in 1964. Also, in the shot, junior Angela Machery of Niagara set a personal best with a throw of 10.80m, while Laruel Creek Track Club (LCTC) juvenile Elisha Turney set a new LCTC Jv. Indoor record with her toss of 8.22m. Later that afternoon, Coombe came back to throw the 20lb weight, where she managed to throw another 14.02m and establishing another Ontario junior record. This was only Coombe's second time throwing the weight in competition. In the men's shot event, Satkaran Cheema of LCTC placed second with a throw 13.84m, behind Track West's decathlete Al Hough's throw of 15.00m. LCTC newcomer, juvenile Nate Wilson established a LCTC juvenile club record with a throw of 10.22m. At the U of S vs U of C vs u of R Tri Dual in Saskatoon Karla Johnson won both women's throwing events and now sits in first place in both events in the CWUAA rankings. She first established a personal best in the shot when she threw 12.97m and then went on to win the weight with a throw of 15.33m. Finishing second in the shot with a throw of 11.45m was Rebecca Atkinson, also of the U of S, and third place went to Lori Budd with a throw of 11.02m. In the Weight Tara Baker was second with 13.51 and Rebecca Atkinson was third with 11.77m. On the men's side Darryl Leason of the U of C won the shot with a throw of 13.60m while Tyler Danielson of the U of S was second with 13.17m and Tim Johnstone, also of the U of S was third with a toss of 13.07m. In weight Danielson was first with 13.67m and Johnstone was second with 12.50m and Cory Bertioa of finished third with 11.89 to complete a Saskatchewan sweep.
