SCHULT GETS TOP COACHING JOBJan 15 2001Athletics Weekly WORLD discus record-holder, Jurgen Schult, now has the chance to prove whether his coaching abilities match his performance pedigree. The man who spun the discus out to the current world record of 74.08m on June 6, 1986, has been appointed Germany's national coach for discus. With an Olympic title from 1988 as well as world and European golds to his credit, the former East German's experience among present day competitors is peerless. Though his final Olympic campaign in Sydney was beset by illness that left the 40-year-old in eighth place, Schult remained a formidable thrower well into his international dotage: a silver at the 1999 World Championships in Seville was proof enough. "The job of national coach appealed to me. I've grown up with the sport, this is my world," said Schult. Certainly the German federation believes the best candidate has been chosen. "No-one can match his experience, we've made the right choice," explained Ruediger Nickel, chairman of the German federation's elite performance committee. The new national coach is likely to be a strict taskmaster. Schult made headlines after winning an Olympic silver in Barcelona in 1992, accusing some team mates of being "tourists" at the Games. Since this was the first Olympics after Germany's unification and the federation was seeking to avoid an approach of victory at all costs, Schult appeared cast in the role of the ruthless "Ossi" or product of GDR track and field. Yet his competitive appearances have usually been distinguished by a sunny temperament from this most technically fluent of throwers.
