THROWING NEWSHamilton runs blustery 3km, while Powell smashes American discus record 30 April 2002 - (USATF News) - Two-time Olympian Suzy Powell set a new American record in the women's discus throw on Sunday at the University of California San Diego Open. Powell's throw of 69.44m bettered the record of 66.10m set by Carol Cady in 1986. Her performance is the best in the world since Russia's Natalya Sadova threw 70.02m on 23 June, 1999. The 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials Champion, Powell is a three-time U.S. Junior champ and the gold medal winner at the 1995 Pan American Junior Championships. Three-time Olympian Suzy Favor Hamilton posted a world leader in the 3,000 metres Saturday at the 93rd Drake Relays, despite light rain and windy conditions with gusts up to 25 miles per hour. In her second 3000m competition in the last 11 years, Hamilton set a meet record in 8 minutes, 56.03 seconds. Favor Hamilton also set Drake records in the 800m (2:01.68) in 1998 and the 1500m (4:05.13) at the 2000 Drake Relays. Favor Hamilton said her next competition will be the 1500m at the USA Outdoor Championships June 21-23 in Palo Alto, California. Other notable performances at Drake included Teri Steer's meet record in the women's invitational shot put of 17.75m. Joey Woody won his seventh career Drake Relays title by winning the invitational 400m hurdles in 48.84, and University of Missouri senior Christian Cantwell continued to impress this season by winning the invitational men's shot put with a throw of 21.07m. Earlier this year Cantwell set the U.S. collegiate leading mark of 21.37m. For his effort, Cantwell received the Maury White Award as the outstanding men's performer of the meet.
