Discus Champion Tests Positive

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) -- Romas Ubartas, the 1992 Olympic discus champion, tested positive for a banned steroid and could be barred from the sport for life.

The 41-year-old Ubartas -- a national hero when he won Lithuania's first gold medal after it regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 -- initially tested positive on April 1 at a training camp in Arkansas.

A follow-up test, completed late last week, confirmed traces of the anabolic steroid boldenon, the general secretary of Lithuania's Athletic Federation, Eugenijus Burokas, said Monday.

Burokas said Ubartas denied he used the banned steroid and called for further tests. But Burokas said it's likely he would be banned for life, with a final decision expected as early as next week.

Ubartas, reportedly was in the United States and unavailable for comment, tested positive for the same substance and was suspended for four years in 1993. A second offense makes a life ban more likely, Burokas said.

Ubartas, who remained competitive past the age most discus throwers retire, planned to compete in the European track championships in Munich in August. He also participated in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, although he didn't win a medal.
