COA ADOPTS TOUGHER QUALIFICATION STANDARDS FOR PAN AM AND OLYMPIC GAMES / L'AOC ADOPTE DES CRITéRES DE SƒLECTION PLUS SƒVéRES RELATIFS AUX JEUX PANAMƒRICAINS ET OLYMPIQUES

EDMONTON (April 19, 2002) - In its ongoing drive to improve overall performances as a nation at Olympic and Pan Am Games, the Canadian Olympic Association today agreed to increase the organization's performance standard for the Athens Olympic Games and Santo Domingo Pan Am Games.

For the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, the team selection qualification will be based on performance criteria equivalent to top 12 in the world. "The board has shown tremendous leadership and vision in adopting this criteria," stated COA president Michael Chambers. "The decision followed a spirited and passionate debate that centered on the board's determination to achieve our Vision for Sport; this Vision sets as our goal an overall fourth place finish at the 2008 Olympic Games and a first place finish in 2010."

The COA will continue to work with each national sport federation (NSF) to establish team selection agreements. Each NSF will lead the process to determine the criteria that best fits with its athlete development plans. The previous top 16 and top half criteria were in existence for 25 years.

For the Santo Domingo Pan Am Games in 2003, sport-by-sport quotas will be developed and allocated on a priority basis according to a tier system of: Tier I - Direct Olympic Qualifier; Tier II Pan Am only sports; and Tier III - Quality of Competition. All competitors must be able to show a istinct possibility of finishing in the top three at the Pan Am Games. Sport-by-sport quotas for Santo Domingo will BE presented to the board at its next meeting in November 2002 in Montreal.

The criteria for the Olympic Winter Games will be determined following the IOC's 2003 decision on the host city for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The COA, a private, not-for-profit corporation, is the largest private sector funder of high performance sport in Canada. It is responsible for all aspects of Canada's involvement in the Olympic Movement, including Canada's participation in the Olympic and Pan American Games. In addition, the COA manages a wide variety of programs that promote the Olympic Movement in Canada through cultural and educational means. For more information see the COA website: www.coa.ca
