THROWING NEWSSlovakian shot putter tests positive for banned steroid Copyright © 2002 Nando Media Copyright © 2002 Agence France-Presse Agence France-Presse BRATISLAVA (March 20, 2002 09:24 PM EST) - Slovakian shot putter Mikulas Konopka has tested positive for banned steroid stanolozol following the European indoor championships, Slovakian agency Tasr reported Wednesday. Konopka finished third at the competition in Vienna, where he surprised by throwing five times past the 20-meter mark before taking the bronze medal with a throw of 20.87m. The athlete's coach, Karol Sula, has vowed to "leave athletics forever" if Konopka's second B sample turns out to be positive. In the event of a second positive result, Konopka could face a two-year ban from the sport.
