STEACY, FORBES WIN ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Lethbridge, AB - Pronghorn Athletics hosted their annual Blue and Gold Banquet Friday night to honor their outstanding athletes in athletic performance and academic achievement. Over 280 athletes, administrators and special guests were in attendance for the supper and awards ceremony. The Guest speaker for the event was former Pronghorn Women's Basketball team member Deb Yanota (1973-77). Yanota was named the Pronghorns Female Athlete of the year in 1977. After receiving her Bachelor of education from the U of L, Deb has been a fixture in the Southern Alberta educational system ever since. Currently the Assistant Principle at LCI, Deb has over 20 years of coaching experience at various levels. In 1992, Deb received the Alberta Schools Athletic Association- Robert H. Routledge Award of Merit for her years of service and dedication to Athletics. She has also received the Health and Physical Education Council Distinguished Achievement award.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Third year thrower, Jim Steacy has continued to raise the bar in the Track and Field throwing events in his first three seasons and has claimed an unprecedented third straight Pronghorn Athlete of the year honor. This season, Steacy remained undefeated in the weight throw versus CIS competition, claiming gold in both the Canada West and CIS Championships while breaking his own record in both events. For the first time in his CIS career, Jim won both the Canada West and CIS shot put titles. For the second straight year he was named the CIS field athlete of the year at nationals.

Prior to the Canada West and CIS meets, Steacy rounded into competitive form early, claiming a new World age record for twenty year olds at the Knights of Columbus Invitational in Saskatoon. His throw of 22.60 broke a 24 year old record and he claimed the title in a strong international field.

Jim was also named, for the second year in a row, the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation Junior Athlete of the Year. He was selected from all athletes in the province under the age of twenty-one and in every sport in Alberta.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Fourth year Track star, Kate Forbes continued her dominance in the throwing events this season and earned her second consecutive Pronghorn Female Athlete of the Year award. Kate remained undefeated in the shot put event, winning both the Canada West and CIS titles. Not only did she sweep the throwing events, with victories in the weight throw, but she also set new Canada West and CIS records in the process. At the Athletics Alberta High performance meet, Kate set a new provincial record with a toss of 19.60 meters, a distance that she would better at the CIS meet in Manitoba later in the year.

PRESIDENTS AWARD

Michelle DeBoer of the Women's Soccer team received the Presidents Award, rewarding the student athlete with the highest academic standing at the University of Lethbridge. DeBoer achieved a impressive 3.94 GPA, while balancing her large commitment to the Women's Soccer team.

TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD - Presented to the team with the highest academic standing.

Women's Track and Field received the team Academic award with a combined GPA of 3.32.
