STEACY WINS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Pronghorn Athletics announce award winners
Lethbridge, AB Š Pronghorn Athletics hosts their annual Blue and Gold Banquet tonight to honor their outstanding athletes in Athletic performance and Academic achievements. Over 250 student athletes, administrators and special guests will be in attendance for the supper and awards presentations. Guest speaker for the occasion is Olympic Gold Medallist Billy Mills. As a large underdog, Mills won the 10,000-meter race at the 1964 Olympics and now serves as the National spokesperson for the aid organization Running Strong for American Indian Youth.
MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
To say this athlete made a tremendous impact to his program would be an understatement. His accomplishments this year have set records and served notice that he is going to be the athlete to beat in the weight throw throughout his University career. While going undefeated in CIS competition in the weight throw this year, he had the three farthest throws ever by a CIS athlete shattering the U of L record, the Canada West record, the CIS record, and the Canadian National junior record. His best throw this year ranks him 12th in the world in the senior ranks while still being a junior. His strong performances in Shot Put while ranking him nationally fell short of a medal performance only because of the stiff competition he faced from his teammates. He received numerous awards this season for his accomplishments at the varsity level including: Canada West rookie of the year, Canada West Performance of the Meet, CW All Star, CIS All Canadian in Weight Throw, and CIS rookie of the year. Last summer while competing in hammer throw he set a Canadian and North American record far enough to rank him fifth in the world.
For his incredible performances over the past year, this yearÕs Male Athlete of the Year is Jim Steacy from the Track and Field Team.
