PRONGHORN THROWERS EARN ALL CANADIAN

The University of Lethbridge track and field team has reaped the rewards of a successful season and a strong CIS championships. The 'Horns came away from the National championships with five of six possible medals in the men's throwing events, a bronze medal in women's pole vault, a number of CIS awards, and a solid fifth place finish in the men's division. The 'Horns also established a record for the most athletes qualifying in an event when they qualified six athletes for the men's weight throw. The previous record was four athletes in an event. They also became the first school in CIS history to sweep all three medals in a field event.

Jim Steacy led the way as he was named the CIS rookie of the year, was a runner up for the CIS field event athlete of the year, was named to the All Canadian team, and established a new CIS record in men's weight throw. Chris Meisner was also named to the All Canadian team as well as first year athlete Jonathan Doucette.

Steacy established a new CIS championships record in weight throw of 20.45 en route to a gold medal finish while rookie Jonathan Doucette came away with the gold medal in men's shot put. Chris Meisner and Adam Smith joined Steacy on the medal podium when they finished second and third respectively in men's weight throw. Meisner also finished with a bronze medal in the shot put to join Doucette on the podium. Mike Sagert added to the point tally when he finished fifth in weight throw while Jonathan Doucette and Scott Paterson finished seventh and ninth respectively to take all but four spots in the top ten. Steacy also finished fifth in shot put and Chris Ripley finished ninth in men's long jump to round out the men's results.

On the women's side Arielle Mitchell established a season's best result to finish with a bronze medal in the women's pole vault. Jamie Alliban finished ninth in women's weight throw while Kirsti Binns was twelfth.

"We had a really strong effort from everyone this weekend" noted coach Larry Steinke. "It's almost unheard of that you have every athlete perform up to expectations on the day but we sure came close. We just had a bit of a tough break with Meisner not throwing as well as he could and suffering his first defeat this season but our depth certainly showed through when Doucette picked up the slack to walk away with the gold medal." The 'Horns were in a tight battle with Guelph, Saskatchewan, and Alberta for the third through sixth spots right up until the last two events of the meet. "The first two spots were going to be nearly impossible to take away from Windsor and Sherbrooke but only four points ended up separating us from third and only two from fourth. The great thing for us is that we have everyone back next year and only one athlete, Mike Sagert, is not a first or second year athlete."
