PRONGHORN TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES PUT IN SOLID EFFORT
The Pronghorn track and field team made a trip to Edmonton this past weekend to participate in the Athletics Alberta High Performance meet. In a preview of the CIS and Canada West menÕs shot put championships, Chris Meisner and Johnathon Doucette of the PronghornÕs and Grant Chapman of the University of Alberta took to the field. In a hotly contested battle Meisner increased his lead in the CIS with a throw of 16.53 meters while Doucette took over second spot in the CIS with a put of 16.17. Chapman finished third with a throw of 15.71. Jim Steacy of the 'Horns finished fourth with a personal best of 15.01 and moved into eighth in the top ten rankings.
In menÕs weight throw Steacy finished second to world championships team member Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops who moved into second place in the world with his weekend performance. Steacy remains undefeated against CIS athletes. Adam Smith increased his seasonÕs best with a throw of 16.28 to finish third. Chris Ripley tied for first place in menÕs long jump and Jaime Thomas took third place in high jump to round out the menÕs results.
On the womenÕs side the 'Horns were led by Lorraine HartyÕs gold medal performance in long jump with a seasonÕs best of 5.41 meters. Red shirt Kate Forbes finished first in womenÕs weight throw and second in shot put while Jamie Alliban was fourth in weight throw. Barb Hunter took bronze in womenÕs 600m and a fourth in the 1500m while teammates Julia Viola and Tara Burke finished in fifth and sixth respectively. Kendra Harper also had a personal best performance en route to fourth place and moved into the CIS top ten with a performance of 3099 points in pentathlon.
