NORTH AMERICAN BEST FOR CHINOOK ATHLETE

While her two older brothers Jim and Sean may be accustomed to rewriting the record books, it's relatively new territory for Chinook track and field club member Heather Steacy. That didn't stop her from throwing a North American best for high School freshman and recording a Canadian youth under seventeen record in women's weight throw with a mark of 14.83 meters. Steacy was competing Thursday evening at the prestigious Simplot Games, one of the largest high school track meets in the U.S.

"Heather threw extremely well considering it was only her fourth competition in the event" noted her coach Larry Steinke. "She is just beginning to explore a great deal of untapped potential but the important thing is for her to just have fun and keep that as her focus.

Steacy's mark bested the old North American High School freshman best by over 2 meters. Meaghan Joyce of Rhode Island held the previous mark of 12.20 meters and was established in 2002. The result for the grade nine student from Gilbert Patterson means that she has thrown farther than any Alberta female under nineteen and will now hold the Alberta junior, juvenile, and midget records.

Sean Steacy also competed at the meet and had a strong performance in men's weight throw. His result of 19.03 meters was good enough for a fourth place finish and is the third farthest throw by a Canadian juvenile athlete. 14.18m.

As a Provincially and Nationally Recognized Club Our Athletes Compete at all Levels From school, local, regional, national and international championships.
