Pronghorn throwers make mark at international meet

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns track and field team once again exerted its dominance in the throwing events over the weekend, competing at the prestigious Knights of Columbus Indoor Games.

The annual meet showcases a number of events by invitational only, with athletes from around the world competing. The 'Horns comprised six out of nine of the invitational spots in the men's weight throw and they did not disappoint, despite going up against athletes the likes of Derek Woodske and Dylan Armstrong, who were the first- and third-ranked throwers in the world going into the meet.

Jim Steacy led the way in the international event, placing third behind Woodske and Armstrong with a throw of 19.31 metres. Steacy remained undefeated against CIS athletes with his latest performance. Adam Smith and Scott Paterson of the 'Horns put in strong finishes of fourth and fifth respectively and both qualified for the CIS Championships with personal best results of 16.27m and 16.21m.

In the open men's shot put competition, the trio of Chris Meisner, Johnathon Doucette and Steacy swept the competition with a one, two three finish respectively. Adam Smith was fifth with a personal best throw of 13.95m. Meisner's throw of 16.08m kept him on top of the CIS rankings while Doucette held onto third position.

On the women's side, red-shirt Kate Forbes won the women's weight throw with a toss of 17.31m and finished atop the field in shot put as well with a throw of 14.32m. Jamie Alliban placed fourth in women's weight throw with a throw of 14.18m.
