Pronghorn throwers continue dominance
EDMONTON, Alta. -- University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's track team entered the weekend seventh-ranked in the country and after sweeping the throws events at the Golden Bear Open meet in Edmonton, will likely make a climb up the ladder.
Rookie Jim Steacy lead the way for the 'Horns in the weight throw, tossing a gold-medal effort 18.99 metres, the second longest all-time throw by a CIS athlete. Mike Sagert and Adam Smith took silver and bronze respectively for the Pronghorn sweep and rookies Scott Paterson and Johnathon Doucette placed fourth and fifth. All five athletes finished ahead of Grant Chapman of the University of Alberta who was ranked second in the country heading into the weekend.
Pronghorn dominance continued in the shot put with a gold-medal effort from Chris Meisner and a third-place toss from Doucette. Steacy managed a fifth-place effort and Smith was sixth in the event.
Pronghorns now hold six of the top 10 CIS spots in weight throw and four of 10 in the shot put.
"We really had a strong weekend for our first weekend out," said head coach Larry Steinke in a news release. "We set a goal of finishing in the top five in the CIS this season as a team as well as continuing our strong individual performances and we are well on our way to achieving our goal."
Meisner was later named the Athletics Alberta athlete of the year for 2002 at the annual awards banquet with Steacy a finalist for the award.
Other strong performances included Chris Ripley moving into third in the CIS long-jump rankings with a leap of 6.85 metres. Jaime Thomas followed that with a third-place finish in high jump and Wes Rogers was sixth in the 1,500-metre run.
On the women's side, the Pronghorns were lead by the silver-medal finish of the women's 4X800-metre relay team which moved them into fourth in the CIS rankings. Kate Forbes added another two silver medals after finishing second in both the women's weight throw and shot put, while Barb Hunter won a bronze medal in the 1000m and teammate Tara Burke added a fifth-place finish in the same event.
Arielle Mitchell, last year's bronze medallist in CIS women's pole vault, moved herself into third place in the CIS rankings with her bronze-medal finish in the open women's pole vault. Wendy Hurdle finished fifth in the open 3000m and moved herself into fifth place in the CIS rankings at the same time. Hurdle also won the junior women's 1500m with a time of 4:58.39.
Lorraine Harty, last year's Canada West silver medalist, moved into ninth place in the CIS rankings with her fourth-place finish in women's triple jump while Jamie Alliban moved into seventh place in the rankings in women's weight throw.
Chinook Track and Field Club member Sean Steacy secured a gold medal in junior men's weight throw and a silver medal in juvenile men's shot put. Heather Steacy also added to the medal count with her gold medal and provincial record in midget women's shot put.
