Meisner sets Jr. shot mark
Athletics Canada News Release
World Junior Track and Field Championships - Day 1 / Championnats
du monde juniors d'athlŽtisme - Jour 1
KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Shot putter Chris Meisner of Lunenberg, N.S., was the
leading Canadian athlete after day one of the ninth World Junior Track and
Field Championships. Hoping for a top-eight performance, he was the 12th and
last qualifier for the final before emerging 11th overall. Now training in
Lethbridge, Alta., with several top throwers and coach Larry Steinke, the
19-year-old threw 18.48 metres in the qualifying round. In the final he
reached 18.54.
"I was throwing pretty good earlier in the week," he said. "I had one throw
of about 20 metres. Every once in a while I have moments of brilliance.
"It's my first international competition, so I'm pretty happy with 11th. I
was really hoping to be in the top eight. It could have been done," added
Meisner, who has twice thrown a pending national junior record of 19.10 this
season.
Winner of the shot put was Edis Elkasevic of Crotia with a world junior
championship record of 21.47 metres, while Sean Shields of the U.S. was
second in 20.54. The bronze medallist was Mika Vasara of Finland in 20.50.
After placing fourth at last year's national junior championships, Meisner
will soon return home to try to win the 2002 national juniors in
Kitchener-Waterloo. World Juniors teammate Johnathan Doucette of Inverness,
N.S., who is also training in Lethbridge, threw 17.31 metres, but did not
qualify for Tuesday's final.
Canadian sprinters also fared well on opening day, as Krysha Bailey of
Coquitlam, B.C., posted the fourth fastest time in the first round of the
women's 100 metres. Her time was 11.67 seconds, compared to a seasonal best
of 11.67, to advance to the semi-finals. Kerri-Ann Mitchell of Toronto ran
11.91 to also qualify for the next round.
Two Canadians advanced into the semi-final round of 400 metres. Ryan
Therrien of Ottawa ran 48.22 seconds in windy conditions, compared to a
personal best of 47.78, while Ayden Olliver of London advanced in the
women's 400 with a time of 54.47. That was the day's 10th fastest time.
Andrew Ellerton of Sudbury, Ont., had a strong start in the men's 800
metres. He placed third in his heat in 1 minute 49.45 seconds to advance to
the semi-final round with the eighth fastest time overall. The day's fastest
time was 1:48.26 for Alex Kipchirchir of Kenya.
Erik Sproll of Winnipeg did not advance, missing a berth in the semi-final
round by two placings. He finished 18th
