Track clubs running circles around competition

From the Lethbridge Herald MAY 1 2002

A pair of local track athletes put in record performances at the Cougar Invitational track meet on the campus of Washington State University in Pullman, Washington over the weekend.

Kip Kangogo of the Kodiak Track Club posted a personal best time of three minutes, 48.62 seconds to claim the gold medal in the 1,500-metre run, a new meet record.

Meanwhile, Jim Steacy of the Chinook Track Club also established a new meet standard, winning the men's high school hammer throw with a throw of 62.68 metres. Steacy then went on to place third in the university and open men's weight throw with a 57.28 metre effort.

Carla Pavan of the Chinook club claimed a silver medal in the women's hammer while teammates Jamie Alliban and Jody Giesbrecht were ninth and 14th respectively.

In all, 11 local athletes represented Lethbridge on the under-23 Alberta team that attended the meet. Eight athletes from Chinook Track and Field Club as well as head coach Larry Steinke were named to the team while Kodiak Track was represented by two athletes and Lethbridge Track Club was represented by one athlete.

"Athletes from Lethbridge comprised more than a quarter of the 40-member Alberta team," Chinook coach Larry Steinke said. "It shows how strong the track programs in this city are becoming."

Steven Viola of Kodiak track finished fourth in the men's steeplechase with a time of 9:36.19 while Chris Meisner and Jonathan Doucette of the Chinook club finished sixth and eighth respectively in men's shot put.

Chinook club athletes Mike Sagert, Adam Smith, and Brent Rybachuk joined Steacy in the open men's hammer final while Chris Ripley finished fourth in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.63 metres.

Arielle Mitchell of the Lethbridge Track Club experienced misfortune in women's pole vault as swirling winds contributed to her failing to clear a height in competition.

"Overall it was a great showing for Lethbridge," said Steinke, who also served as the throws coach for the Alberta team.

"For most of the athletes this was their opening meet of the season and they were competing against US athletes who had at least six or seven meets under their belt so the performances were extremely good for this time of year."

The next meet for most of these athletes will be this weekend's Lethbridge Spring meet hosted by the Lethbridge Track Club at the University of Lethbridge.
