Pronghorn track sets school mark at CWUAA meet

From the Lethbridge Herald FEB 26 2002

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorn Track and Field team had a banner weekend at the Canada West championships as it qualified a record number of athletes on to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport national championships.

The Pronghorns qualified eight athletes for the CIS championships, all the while setting 20 personal best marks and four school records.

Leading the way for the 'Horns were Brent Rybachuk, Arielle Mitchell and Lorraine Harty, all with silver medal Canada West performances.

Rybachuk threw 16.23 metres in the men's weight throw to finish second behind Jeremy Edwards of University of British Columbia and ahead of defending CIS champ Grant Chapman of the University of Alberta.

The rest of the throws team was also impressive as Mike Sagert placed fourth with a 15.59 metre throw, Chris Meisner was sixth with a 15.18 metre throw and Adam Smith was seventh, reaching 15.15 metres. It gave the 'Horns a Canada West record four athletes in the top-eight and earned all four competitors a spot in the CIS Championships, Mar. 6-8 in Sherbrooke, Que. in March.

Meisner then added a bronze medal win in the men's shot put, also qualifying for nationals in the shot event and earning a nomination as Canada West rookie of the year.

The U of L now has five throwers ranked in the top-10 in the CIS throws rankings.

On the women's side, Mitchell finished second with a personal best 3.69 metre effort, narrowly missing attempts at a new Canada West record. Kelsey Henry of the University of Saskatchewan won gold by setting a new CWUAA standard of 3.82 metres while Lethbridge native Brynn Anderson, competing for the U of A, finished third.

Harty came through with a final round leap of 11.33 metres, jumping from fourth to second and earning silver in the women's triple jump event.

Mitchell and Harty will be joined by Jody Giesbrecht and Jaime Alliban at the women's CIS championships as they finished fourth and fifth in the women's weight throw with performances of 14.75 and 14.21 metres respectively. Both marks surpassed the previous school record.

Rounding out the medal performances was Jaime Thomas who finished third in men's high jump.

"It was a super weekend of results," U of L head coach Larry Steinke said after earning a nomination for Canada West men's coach of the year.

"Everyone came to compete and we definitely turned some heads. It just reinforces that we are definitely a national powerhouse in the throws with this kind of quality and depth."
V "I couldn't have asked for better results from this weekend," Steinke added. "Everyone performed well and every single athlete poured their heart into their performance this weekend and it definitely showed with all the personal best and CIS qualification marks."
