Steacy shines at Simplot Games
Lethbridge's Jim Steacy, competing for the Chinook Track Club, grabbed gold in the high school men's weight throw at the
Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho over the weekend.
The 24th annual meet is considered one of the top events in North America, further stamping Steacy as the premier high school
thrower on the continent.
Steacy's throw of 71 feet, one inch was nearly six feet beyond second place competitor Leif Arrhenius of Utah and earned Steacy
the gold medal, one year after winning bronze in the same event.
"We drove down so that I had plenty of time to get rested and then be able to get focused on the task of winning," said Steacy of
his approach to the meet."This is the largest high school meet in North America and although I didn't throw as well as I can my
goal was definitely to finish in first place."
Steacy is the top-ranked high school thrower in North America with the next closest competitor almost five feet behind the
Winston Churchill athlete. Steacy's Canadian record throw of 23.08 metres is one of the top throws of all time in North America
Steacy will now focus on getting ready for the outdoor season and earning a spot on the Canadian World Junior Championship
team.
