Domes, Bunbury Lead Pronghorn Tracksters

Competing at the Athletics Alberta High Performance meet this past weekend Tanya Bunbury and Kyle Domes led the Pronghorn track and field team with a pair of gold medals.

Bunbury established a new personal best in handily winning her heat and then went on to win the womenÕs 60m sprint final. Meanwhile Kyle Domes also established a new personal best enroute to winning the senior menÕs 600m.

Throwers Chris Meisner, Brent Rybachuk and Mike Sagert also had strong performances. Meisner was the second place university finisher in menÕs shot behind CIS defending champion Grant Chapman of the Univesity of Alberta while Rybachuk was second in the menÕs weight throw to Chapman while Sagert was the third place finisher in the menÕs weight throw. MeisnerÕs performance was also and Alberta Junior menÕs provincial record.

"The team is really starting to shape up for our run to the CIS championships in the second week in march" noted head coach Larry Steinke. "we have a lot of depth this year, especially in the throws and everyone is starting to run on all cylinders as we get closer to the CWUAA and CIS championships." Strong performances were also put in by Barb Hunter and Julia Viola who established new personal bests in the 600m and 1000m races. Hunter won her heat and finished 6th overall in a strong field while Viola was third in her heat and 9th overall.

Hunter and Viola then combined with Heather Hurdle and Tara Burke to surpass the school record in the 4X800m relay by almost 40 seconds and moved into the top ten in the CIS rankings.

Lorraine Harty also had a strong weekend as she had a seasons best performance in womenÕs long jump of 5.35m to finish second and then finished 6th in womenÕs triple jump.

Arielle Mitchell was fourth in the high performance section of the womenÕs pole vault with a clearance of 3.45m. "I am really pleased with the way everyone is stepping it up a notch as we get closer to the conference and national championships and IÕm expecting some great performances as the season progresses", says Steinke.

Next action for the Pronghorns will be the CWUAA championships on Feb 22 and 23 at the University of Saskatchewan.
