SASKATOON, Sask. -- Chris Meisner lead the way with a national record throw in the shot put as the
University of Lethbridge Track team brought home seven medals from the Downtown Lions Sled Dog Open
Track and Field Meet in Saskatoon over the weekend.
Meisner set a new national junior shot put record with a throw of 16.34 metres to claim the gold medal.
Jonathan Doucette of Lethbridge's Chinook Track Club placed second and won silver with a 14.66 metre toss
while Jim Steacy of Chinook placed fourth with a 12.97 metre throw.
Steacy went on to medal in the open men's weight throw when he tossed a bronze medal winning distance of
15.21 metres.
Other medal performances for the Pronghorns came in the junior women's 60-metre sprint where Tanya Bunbury
was second by 1/100th of a second with a time of 8.12 seconds. Erin Hauser was a silver medallist in women's
high jump, Lorrain Harty won silver in junior women's long jump and then placed fourth in the open women's
triple jump. Jamie Alliban was a bronze medallist for the Pronghorns in women's shot put.
On the men's side Kyle Domes won a bronze medal in the men's 600m and was fourth in the 300m sprint.
Pronghorns also grabbed a team medal as the women's 4x100-metre relay team of Arielle Mitchell, Tanya
Bunbury, Angie Jackson and Harty grabbed silver.
Other notable results for the 'Horns included a fifth place finish by Tara Burke in the women's 1000m. Her time
of 3:09.59 seconds was a 10-second personal best while Julia Viola was sixth in the women's 600m with a time
of 1:43.29. Jody Giesbrecht upped her season's best in women's weight throw to 13.75m in finishing 5th while
Jaime Thomas was a fourth place finisher in the men's high jump and Adam Smith was a fourth place finisher
in men's weight throw with a toss of 14.84 metres.
"I was very pleased with the weekend's result," Pronghorns head coach Larry Steinke said. "I was especially
happy with the middle distance group's efforts as they raced incredibly gutsy races that led to huge personal
bests."
Competing in an indoor discus competition held in conjunction with the meet the Lethbridge troops swept the
competition when Meisner claimed gold while Steacy and Smith were second and third respectively. Sean Steacy
of the Chinook club also claimed a silver medal in his first effort in a pentathlon.
