Steacy sets new track and field record
From the Lethbridge Herald Dec 06 2001
Jim Steacy of the Chinook Track and Field Club of Lethbridge established a new
Canadian record in the juvenile men's weight throw at the Athletics Alberta Last
Chance meet in Edmonton over the weekend.
Steacy threw 21.91 metres and bettered the old mark of 21.19 meters established by
Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops in 1998. The Athletics Alberta Juvenile Athlete of
the year, Steacy established a first year juvenile mark at the same meet last year with
a throw of 19.63 metres and now owns both Canadian juvenile records.
In other club results, Jonathan Doucette won silver medals in both the junior men's
shot put and the junior men's weight throw.
Meanwhile, University of Lethbridge Pronghorn athletes also took part in the event,
sweeping the medals in two out of four throwing events and setting a provincial
record in another.
Chris Meisner led the 'Horns with gold medals in both the shot put and weight throw
and also established a first year junior record in shot put with his toss of 14.56
metres. His winning performance in the weight throw was 14.57 metres.
Adam Smith added to the medal count with a toss of 14.11 metres, good for third
place and a bronze medal, while teammate Cody Magneson was fourth. Smith and
Magneson were also fourth and fifth respectively in the shot put.
In other men's results, Kyle Dome won the 400-metre and was sixth in the 800m.
On the women's side, the 'Horns swept both throwing events.
Jamie Alliban won the women's weight throw with a toss of 13.55 metres while
teammates Andrea Sanders and Cindie Dennis were second and third respectively.
In shot put, Kendra Harper won the event with a throw of 10.91 metres while
Alliban, Dennis and Sanders were second, third and fourth respectively.
"Overall I was extremely pleased with the early results," Pronghorns' coach Larry
Steinke said. "We only traveled with the freshmen and had reserved expectations but
things went better than expected for where we are in our training."
The Pronghorns will now host North Idaho College in a dual meet, Saturday in the
old soccer building at the Lethbridge Exhibition grounds. Action begins at 11 a.m.
