Provincial Outstanding Athlete Award for Steacy

Jim Steacy of the Chinook Track and Field Club was named the Athletics Alberta Outstanding Juvenile Athlete of the Year for 2001 at the annual Athletics Alberta Awards Banquet held in Calgary on Saturday Nov 17.

Steacy beat out nominees Matt Doherty of Red Deer and Travis McKay of Leduc for the award. Steacy was a member of the Canadian team to the World Youth Championships in Debrecen Hungary as well as a member of the Pan American Junior Championships team where he placed fourth. He was also a provincial gold medallist in Hammer and Discus and a silver medallist in javelin and shot put and was the silver medallist at the National Junior championships in July.

During the season Steacy also established new records in juvenile menšs hammer with a throw of 62.14 meters with the 12lb hammer and a new junior record of 59.32 meters with the 16lb hammer. "It's great to be recognized in this way for the year I had and it definitely is an honour" said Steacy. "It certainly is a great way to end the year and begin a new one." Steacy will begin his indoor season along with the rest of his teammates with the last chance meet in Edmonton where he hopes to surpass his national juvenile record that he established last indoor season in the weight throw.
