Steacy fourth in Junior Pan Am hammer
From the Lethbridge Herald Oct 20 2001
SANTA FE, Argentina -- Jim Steacy of the Chinook Track and Field Club established a new Alberta under 18 junior
record while competing at the Pan American Junior championships.
Steacy's mark of 59.21 bettered the old record by over seven metres and placed him fourth in the final just missing a
bronze medal behind Luis of Mexico who threw 60.37 metres.
That mark leaves Steacy as the top ranked North American high schooler with the 16-lb. hammer ahead of Adam
Midles of Olympia, Wash., who has thrown 58.31. Steacy had an excellent series with all of his marks bettering the
old provincial record by five metres.
Steacy's coach Larry Steinke was ecstatic with the performance.
"We knew if he threw well he would be challenging for a medal and would likely finish in the top five considering
how he had been throwing lately in practice," said Steinke.
Steacy's performance was also just shy of the qualifying distance for the World Junior Championships that take place
in Jamaica in July of 2002.
"This sets him up well for next year and the fantastic part is that he isn't even a true junior yet," added Steinke.
Steacy is still a juvenile and will be eligible for the Pan Am juniors in two years where he hopes to bring back a
medal, hopefully gold.
"I'm ecstatic, everything felt really good and to achieve a personal best in an international competition is great," said
Steacy. "I'm thankful for such an opportunity and I know this wouldn't have been possible without the support of my
coach, my teammates and the community of Lethbridge."
Jonathan Doucette of the Chinook Track Club was also competing at the Pan Am Junior meet and finished ninth in
men's shot put with a throw of 14.41 metres. Brynn Anderson of the University of Alberta and Lethbridge Track and
Field Clubs will compete in women's pole vault today.
