Chinook athletes on national teams

From the Lethbridge Herald AUG 01 2001

Chinook track and field club athlete Jim Steacy has been named to his second Canadian National team of the summer while clubmate Carla Pavan has earned her first national team honours.

Steacy placed second at this past weekend's National Junior championships in Calgary when he threw a new Alberta junior provincial record of 52.59 metres in hammer. Steacy had earlier finished 11th in his qualifying group at the World Under 17 championships in Debrecen Hungary and despite being a juvenile moved up the to junior age group to capture second place. Steacy will represent Canada at the Junior Pan American Games to be held in Argentina in October.

Carla Pavan made it the fifth national team appointment this summer for the local club when she was named to the (FISU) World University Games team in women's hammer. Pavan is one of only seven Albertans named to the team. The competition will take place in Beijing, China during the first week of September.

"I'm ecstatic about their assignments to the National team," says Chinook coach Larry Steinke "They have both worked extremely hard this year towards making those teams and have definitely earned it."

The club will also have representation at the Canada Games in London, Ont. later in August as Mike Sagert, Brent Rybachuk, and Jody Giesbrecht will be throwing hammer for the team. Chris Ripley will join the team in long jump after his strong performance of 6.93 metres which won the Tri-Province meet held last weekend.

As a Provincially and Nationally Recognized Club Our Athletes Compete at all Levels From school, local, regional, national and international championships.
