Juniors vault city into track spotlight
From the Lethbridge Herald July 31 2001
Trio of girls crack top four at Canadian junior national pole vault
competition
CALGARY -- Lethbridge is fast becoming known as a pole vault power
after a trio of junior girls placed in the top four at the Canadian Junior
Track and Field Championships in Calgary over the weekend.
Lethbridge Track and Field Club vaulters claimed first, third and fourth
place at the national championship event, all breaking the previous
meet record vault along the way.
Karla McGee led the way for Lethbridge Track, winning her third
consecutive Canadian junior championship with a meet record 3.75
metre vault.
Breaking the Lethbridge sweep was Saskatoon vaulter Kelsie Hendry
who won silver with a 3.65 metre clearance. Arielle Mitchell and Brynn
Anderson then grabbed third and fourth spot respectively, both clearing
3.60 metres. Mitchell won bronze because she cleared on her second
attempt to Anderson's third.
Three other Lethbridge pole vaulters also qualified to compete at the
junior nationals with 15-year-old Amy Karl placing 16th with a personal
best jump of 2.90 metres. Janelle Miller, also 15, was 22nd with a
personal best 2.50 metre clearance. Nina Varsava of Lethbridge's
Chinook Track and Field Club finished 23rd overall tying her personal
best with a 2.40 metre jump.
In other action, Jim Steacy of Chinook won the silver medal in the
hammer throw with a personal best 52.59 metre toss.
Lethbridge Track's Todd Atkinson was 10th in triple jump with a leap of
12.28 metres.
McGee, Mitchell, Anderson and Steacy all qualified for the selection
pool for the Canadian junior national team that will compete at the Pan
Am Junior Championships in Argentina this October. The team will be
selected near the end of August.
Meanwhile, McGee, Mitchell and Steacy will represent Alberta at the
Canada Games in London, Ontario in mid August.
Janelle Miller of Lethbridge Track (pole vault, 1,500 metres) and Sean
Steacy of Chinook (pole vault) will represent Alberta at the Legion
Canadian Juvenile Championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec in early
August.
