Track athletes collect medals

Four Lethbridge track and field athletes combined to win five medals at the 2001 Royal Canadian Legion Alberta/Northwest Territories Command Track and Field Camp and Meet held earlier this month in Calgary.

Janelle Miller earned three medals, including gold in the midget girls 1,500 and 3,000 metre races. Along with a bronze medal in the 400 metre race, Miller tied for first in the midget girls division.

Sean Stacey of Lethbridge won gold in the midget boys discus with a toss of 41.85 metres to continue an impressive season. Earlier in the season he won five gold medals at the Lethbridge Spring Meet, setting a provincial record in the pole vault of 3.30 metres.

At the Rocky Mountain Relays, he entered in 10 events and won five gold medals including the discus, hammer throw, pole vault, high jump and 4x400 relay, setting meet records in the hammer throw and discus.

At the Alberta-Saskatchewan Dual Meet in June, he added three more gold in the hammer throw, pole vault and discus. He added four more gold medals at the Alberta Midget Provincial Championships earlier this month in Edmonton.

Elle-Maija Tailfeathers won bronze in the juvenile girls 1,500 metre racewalk, and Amy Karl rounded out the Lethbridge entrants.

The event was held over three days, with 227 participants from 68 communites across Alberta, the NorthwestTerritories, and eastern British Columbia. There was also a two-day camp with training tips from Les Gramantik, Canadian Olympic and University of Calgary track coach.

Miller and Steacy were among 37 athletes selected from this camp to compete at the Royal Canadian Legion's Dominion Track and Field Championships, in August in Sherbrooke, Que.
