Chinook athletes named to 2001 national teams

From the Lethbridge Herald JULY 8 2001

Three athletes from the Chinook Track and Field team have been named to national teams for the 2001 summer season.

Leading the way is Jim Steacy who was named to the Canadian team which will be competing at the world under-17 championships in Debrecen, Hungary.

Steacy was the only thrower and one of only four Albertans to be named to the team.

"It's a great honour to be representing Canada and fulfilling one of the goals I set last fall," said Steacy. "It will definitely be a great experience and I am looking forward to competing against the best in the world."

Steacy will be throwing the discus as well as the hammer at the meet and has already had a stellar season setting provincial records in both events.

The championships will take place from July 9-17 and Steacy's coach Larry Steinke will also be attending the meet as part of the team staff. Steacy will also attend the Canadian Junior Championships at the end of July. Although only of juvenile age, he has a good chance of making the Pan American Junior team, being presently ranked second in the junior age group.

Two other Chinook athletes, Patti Pilsner-Steinke and husband coach Larry Steinke, will represent Canada at the Jeux de Fracophonie which will take place in Ottawa July 19-25.

Pilsner-Steinke finished third at the National championships and Steinke, suffering from a cold, was fifth but was one of only three athletes with the necessary standard to make the team.

"We have both wanted to make the same National team at some point so this is a great opportunity for us," says Pilsner-Steinke.

Patti, a teacher at St. Francis Junior High School, will be throwing hammer while Larry will be throwing the javelin.

Three members of the Chinook Track Club have also been named to the Alberta Team for the Canada Summer Games. Mike Sagert, Brent Rybachuk and Jody Giesbrecht, all hammer throwers, have been named to the team while long jumper Chris Ripley was named as an alternate.

As a Provincially and Nationally Recognized Club Our Athletes Compete at all Levels From school, local, regional, national and international championships.
