National, Provincial and Meet Records for Chinook Athletes

Competing at the Rocky Mountain Relays this past weekend the Chinook Track and Field club compiled eight meet records, two provincial records and one national record.

Larry Steinke surpassed his three week old national record with a toss of 72.68 in men's javelin which also surpassed the national team standard for the Jeux Fracophone Games in Ottawa in July. Sean Steacy led the way in the provincial and meet record category with meet records in the midget men's hammer and pole vault while the pole vault clearance of 3.60 was also a provincial Midget best. Sean also won gold medals in high jump, and discus while finishing second in long jump and javelin and fourth in 100m hurdles and triple jump and shot put.

Jim Steacy established meet records in juvenile men's discus and hammer enroute to wins in both of those events and a second place finish in shot put. Ranked second Nationally, decathlete Greg Urbanczyk won all three of his events with a meet record coming in high jump and wins in discus and polevault. Brent Rybachuk, competing in only his second hammer competition set a new meet record in the senior men's hammer with a trhow of 48.35. Rybachuk also competed in his first javelin competition and finished second with a throw of 49.86. Chris Ripley led the jumpers with a new meet record in long jump of 6.62 while Jaime Thomas finished second wtih a leap of 6.05. Thomas also finished third in men's triple jump with a jump of 12.77 and finished second in high jump with a clearance of 1.85m.

On the women's side, Katie Gregory, a first year midget, garnered a provincial record in hammer throw with a toss of 34.62 and finished third in midget women's pole vault. Chinook Women swept the open women's hammer competitions with season bests coming for Carla Pavan of 56.12, 58.60 for Patti Pilsner-Steinke, and Jody Geisbrecht rounded out third spot with a throw of 40.87.

Next action for the club will be at the Senior Alberta Provincial Championships in Edmonton this weekend and the high school members will be at the Alberta High School championships also being held in Edmonton.
